Newborn Care Q & A

When should newborn care start?

Your baby should first visit the pediatrician within the first 2-5 days of life. You are welcome to connect with the Pedi Place @ Westover Hills team before you give birth to meet the providers and learn what to expect.

What is included in newborn care?

During a newborn care appointment, the Pedi Place @ Westover Hills team monitors your baby’s weight and height to ensure they grow well. The doctor always performs a comprehensive physical examination and asks questions about the baby’s eating and sleeping habits.

The team can answer any questions and offer recommendations regarding breastfeeding, feeding schedules, formula, and potential digestive problems. You can also get answers to questions about diapering, bathing, caring for circumcision and umbilical cord sites, burping, and sleeping. Your provider may ask questions about your home and discuss how you can best support your baby’s health and safety.

It’s a good idea to bring a list of questions to your visit so you get the answers you need. The team spends time with you to ensure you feel supported in parenting and promoting your baby’s health. Taking care of yourself is also important as a parent of a newborn.

Newborn care also includes the important first vaccinations that prevent devastating diseases.

How often should I schedule my baby’s newborn care?

Your baby sees the doctor frequently in the first few months of life. After your initial visit at 2-5 days old, make an appointment for two weeks, four weeks (if there are any concerns that need to be followed early), and two months of age. You may need to schedule more frequent visits if your baby is premature or has specific health concerns.

If you have concerns about your baby’s health or development, make an appointment outside of these routine visits. The practice has same-day sick care visits available. Call for guidance if you aren’t sure you need to come into the office.
